It's just good sense, if you have the HDD space to support two installations of the game. This does two things: 1) preserves your Steam install from any potential 'mod breakage' if something goes awry, and 2) preserves your mod install from getting broken by and updates to the game via Steam.

The biggest recommendation of all, however, is that you MAKE A COPY of your Steam install into a seperate folder BEFORE you mod anything, and then mod the copy. It quite literally takes all of the headaches out of modding the game. Using the CKAN frontend, you can easily select mods to install, remove, or update, and it will notify you of any other dependencies to make your mods work. That mod will also inform you of incompatibilities or why any mod is not loaded.Alternatively, the SIMPLEST way to install mods is using CKAN, the Comprehensive Kerbal Archive Network. Highly recommend KSP-AVC mod, because it will check all mods for updates, list them and list any conflicts. Usually this causes EXTREME loading time. Sometimes the modders package it along, that causes game to execute ModuleManagers of different versions twice (or more). Make sure that ModuleManager DLL is ONLY present in GameData - and nowhere else inside GameData, especially not in any mod subdirectories. This 'mod' is vital, because its ModuleManager, who does patching the files. Its a mod consisting of a single DLL file (regardless of OS), which must be put directly into GameData. Make sure the mod 'ModuleManager' is of latest version and installed. Typically every mod resides in own directory. Make sure to install all mods according to instructions. You put every mod directory next to 'Squad'. In Vanilla game, the Folder 'Squad' recides in GameData and these are official parts. Mycen_keriadyne: Is anyone having the same issues?
